Equine Podiatry

Qualified through the Australian College of Equine Podiotherapy, I offer maintenance hoofcare through to rehab of many hoof and soundness issues. The basis of my work is barefoot, helping horses to build and develop strong balanced hooves for soundness and performance.

Equine Podiatry is about building the best hooves possible for each horse, my goal is for each horse to be sound on his own bare hooves, and for those hooves to support the soundness of the entire horse throughout his lifetime. Excellent hoof care is about much more than just trimming, healthy hooves need the right nutrients, a healthy, varied environment and movement.

I work around a regular 4 week trimming schedule for all equines in my care, this shorter schedule maintains healthier balance, prevents major distortions, helps keep on top of any issues before they become big issues, and aids in rehab cases.

I have very limited availabilty, but occasionally a spot becomes available, so if you feel our hoof care values align, please get in touch.

Barefoot Trimming

A horse who is sound on their own bare feet is the epitome of hoof health, it is my goal to help each horse develop the most robust feet they can. Building sound hooves requires a holistic approach to hoofcare; trimming which respects the internal structures and the horses individual conformation, promoting comfort for positive development, a deep understanding of form and function, aswell as how diet, environment and movement can impede or enhance barefoot performance.

Regular, quality barefoot trims from a trained professional, backed up by an owner empowered with knowledge of how to support their horse through species appropriate nutrition and lifestyle, can be the key to making barefoot work for you and your horse.

Composite Glue-On Shoeing for Performance

I offer a range of composite glue-on shoes to compliment and build a healthier hoof. Composite (plastic or rubber) shoes are a game changer for many horses. They offer protection for healthy hooves working hard on different surfaces, or comfort for compromised feet.

Composites provide protection while still allowing hoof function, shoes aim to mimic load distribution and flexion of a healthy hoof. Mechanics and balance can be altered and built by the shoe and glue, creating positive angles and alignment, and improving landing and breakover.

Glueing means that horses can wear shoes for as long or as short a length of time as we like, some horses will wear glue-on shoes just for a specific event and then go back to barefoot, without damaging the hoof, others live all year round in their shoes.

I predominantly 3D print my own shoes, which means I can customise shoes for each horse, printing to size and adding in wedges as needed, and the shoes can also be rasped into shape.

Composite Shoeing and Casting for Rehab

Rehab work often requires materials that can be used to “build hoof”, hold in treatment and provide stability and comfort.

Casting on its own is a great solution for horses needing quick comfort and hoof capsule sabilisation. For hooves that are broken, collapsed or infected, casting creates a “new hoof capsule”, and holding in treatment for thrush or seedy toe infections.

Cast and shoe combinations can help with rehabing broken hooves, while adding depth and alignment. they are also useful for some laminitic horses and other pathologies.

Formahoof

Formahoof is a bit of a secret weapon in rehab. It is “liquid fit” so it moulds perfectly to the hoof on the inside, while creating a new “ideal hoof capsule” on the outside. It wraps around the whole hoof with a polymer that performs in a similar way to hoof, it can flex and twist, while creating greater stability.

When it comes to building alignment while promoting hoof growth and function, I have never seen anything else that promotes development of both internal and external structures quite like Formahoof.

Metron Hoof Software

Metron Hoof is a system for taking accurate and repeatable hoof photos. The blocks and camera platform mean that you take photos at the correct height and same angles, allowing quality photos for hoof assessment.

Usung Metron gives me much more information about hoof health and alignment than assessing by eye or regular photos.

The repeatablity of the photos means that images can be calibrated accurately to size, allowing us to see development (or degeneration) over time.

The software program marks up hoof alignment and proportions. If you are having your horse xrayed by a vet, the vet can use these blocks for xrays, then the xrays can also be marked up in Metron and accurately compared of overlaid with the external photos.

Hoof Boot Sizing

Hoof Boots are an inbetween of barefoot and shoes, they are a very useful addition to the barefoot horse’s wardrobe, for protection and comfort when ridden.

Boots can also be used for rehab. Padded rehab boots provide comfort for laminitic horses, or injured hooves.

I carry sizing shells for a number of different hoof boots; Scoot Boots, Renegades, Easycare Epics, Gloves and Clouds.
